On the west side of Thasos, the Maries and the Skala Maries, personify the concept of peace and tranquility on one hand and that of pure hospitality on the other. Indicative of their hospitality is the well-known bean soup feast organized by locals in the area of Genna. Contact with nature is the main activity of the residents through stockbreeding, beekeeping and olive harvesting.
In recent years, however, the residents of Skala Maries began working in the tourism sector by creating well-looked after lodgings for every visitor. The picturesque harbor with the traditional ouzo bars and taverns will offer the chance to groups to have fun by enjoying traditional ouzo delis and local tsipouro snaps. The deep blue waters of Atspa (or Aspa) beach will reward the most demanding visitor. It is worth visiting the Monastery of the Assumption and to worship the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary. Finally, the artificial lake in the village attracts every lover of nature.
